Langlois red brick school, sitting adjacent to The Village Gym was built in 1922 as the Langlois High School. The school district built Pacific High School in 1957 as a shared high school, equidistant between Langlois and Port Orford that replaced the high schools in each town. The two original schools in Langlois, the brick school and the Blanco School 0.25 miles to the south, spent the rest of their educational years alternating between being the elementary and middle schools. The red brick school closed in 1995, and eventually Blanco School shut its doors as well, and all Langlois/Port Orford students attended Driftwood in Port Orford.
An addition to the red brick school, the gym, or as some called it "the barn", was built in 1927 with a 3/4 sized basketball court, performance stage, and locker rooms. Many memories for several generations were made in " the barn." Student names may be found carved into the supporting posts on the edge of the court or hidden behind closet doors.
In 2015, a dream to provide a small business that would allow for all members of the community, young or old, to have 24-hr access to a facility of health, was born. Many coats of paint and hours of sweat later the doors were opened as The Village Gym where workout equipment, basketball court access, a T.V. lounge, yoga room, fitness classes, and a gymnastics program can all be found. A highlight of The Village Gym from its start is that the community continues generating ideas on how to further improve the former school gym that holds a place in the hearts of so many.
During the period between when the school closed and when The Village Gym was established the facility was used for the 2CJ school district and Cape Blanco Youth Sports athletic practices. The Village Gym honors this tradition and, as often as schedule permits, invites the youth teams to practice on our court free of charge. We see this as a chance to support the kids of our community, and offer opportunities for them to have fun and succeed.
The Village Gym’s goal is to continue growing by tailoring ideas to captivate the children, their parents, and their grandparents of the area. Look for our summer kids camps, annual basketball tournament, and dance classes. The Village Gym is a community asset, join us and take advantage of keeping a legacy of our community alive.
